A youthful, radiant Amy Winehouse aged just 20, glances to her left, at rock photographer Phil Nicholls, as he shoots her pre-soundcheck at Bristol’s famous gig venue, The Louisiana, in October 2003.
Phil’s image was captured just three days after the release of Amy’s debut album, Frank. The gig at The Louisiana would have been one of the first of the tour to promote the album, and thus represents an almost perfect piece of rock history. Phil stayed on for the gig, describing it as both breath-taking and phenomenal.
Amy went onto become one of the most recognised artists in the world, releasing just two albums during her short lifetime. Back To Black with its unforgettable title track, Rehab, and Tears Dry On Their Own, was the best-selling album in the UK in 2007, at 1.85 million copies. Worldwide, Back To Black went onto sell a total of 3.58 million copies.
Following her death, at that point in time, Back To Black became the UK’s best-selling album of the 21st Century. Such was the impact of her silky, effortless vocals, Amy has been credited with a new genre that the music press called ‘blue-eyed soul’; a mixture of old-school soul and jazz.
Since her tragic and untimely death, Amy’s music has created an incredible legacy for one who died so young. Her name also lives on with The Amy Winehouse Foundation, whose mission is to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people, as well as supporting, informing and inspiring vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.
