After the death of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl founded Foo Fighters, named after UFOs and other aerial phenomenon reported in World War 2 by allied aircraft pilots.
Grohl formed the group initially with bassist Nate Medel, drummer William Goldsmith, and Nirvana's former touring guitarist, Pat Smear. Hirings and firings saw Goldsmith and Smear depart, to be replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl.
Stahl stayed only briefly, being fired just before the band's third album, 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' (1999). He was replaced by guitarist Chris Shiflett. Since 1999, the Foos have released six more studio albums; 'One By One', 'In Your Honor', Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace', 'Wasting Light', 'Sonic Highways', and 'Concrete and Gold'.
